この単語の意味を知った時に、ふと、最近覚えた別の単語’unearth’が思い浮かびました。この単語にも「掘り出す」「発掘する」という意味があります。excavateとunearthの違いが気になったので調べてみました。

excavateは、「掘る」行為に重点が置かれている単語。（何かを見つけるために）掘る。「発掘」という単語で言うと、「掘」がメイン。
unearthは、「発見する」「明るみになる」という方に重点が置かれている単語。（掘ったら）出てきた／見つかった。「発掘」という単語で言うと、「発」がメイン。
地中に埋まっているのがあらかじめ分かっていて、それを取り出すために掘るのはexcavate。別の目的で穴を掘っていたら偶然化石や土器などが見つかったらunearthになるのかなと思います。
