行方不明で

アメリカのフロリダ州でマンションが崩壊した事故のニュースに出てきた表現。現在進行形なので、ニュースの情報が刻一刻と変わっていきますが、その中で何度も出てくる表現です。

CNNで見つけた例

・Emergency officials are also asking people to call 305-614-1819 if they have relatives who are unaccounted for.

また、BBCでは次のような表現を見つけました。

・At least 102 people have now been accounted for, but it is uncertain how many were in the building when it came down. Dozens of people have been evacuated from what is left of the structure.

unaccounted for が行方不明の意味なので、accounted forは、その反対の意味：(事故事件の後で)〈人物などの〉所在[消息]が確認されるになるようです。

account for　は、～の割合を占める、～から成るという意味は知っていましたが、〔人の〕消息を知っている、〔人の〕行動を把握しているという意味があることを今回初めて知りました。
